In Focus: Teapots

Perfect for intermediate throwers | small class size | 2 x 4.5 hour sessions | £220pp

This focused two-day course is all about learning how to make a fully functional teapot from start to finish. Over the two sessions, you'll learn how to throw the body of the teapot, create a well-fitting spout, pull and attach a handle, and bring all of the individual elements together into one finished piece.

With a small group of just 6 students maximum, you'll have plenty of individual guidance and support throughout the process. We'll look at the technical considerations that go into making a successful teapot, including proportions, joins, spout design, lids, handles and finishing.

This course is ideal if you've got some previous throwing experience and would like to challenge yourself with a more complex form. By the end of the course, you'll have the skills and understanding to approach making teapots independently — and, most importantly, you'll have your very own handmade teapot ready to enjoy (or gift!) over the Christmas period.

Course Requirements

  • Able to centre clay up to 700g
  • Some previous throwing experience
  • Comfortable throwing independently

Course Structure

Day 1: Throwing the Teapot Body & Lid

We'll begin by throwing the main body of the teapot, considering proportions, shape and wall thickness. We'll also look at creating a well-fitting lid & spout.

Day 2: Spouts, Handles & Finishing

On day 2 we trim your teapot body and cut your spout to shape. We'll then focus on creating the additional elements that bring your teapot together, like creating a comfortable handle. You'll then assemble, refine and finish your teapot ready for glazing and firing.

Please note

Teapots are a more technically challenging form, so some previous throwing experience is required. The course is designed to give you the knowledge and techniques to make a teapot successfully, but you can work within your limits by choosing what size teapot to make to suit your ability.
